Funky Flower Crochet Pattern

There are never enough crochet appliques. And the only thing that is more fun than crocheting them, is designing them :) I was in the mood for an elaborate layered flower and this is the result. When finished, the flower is approximately 7cm / 3" in diameter.

MATERIALS
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook (US: E)
  • Sport / 5 ply (12 wpi) yarn in 3 colors (I Catania Solids from Schachenmayr in dark yellow, light green and light purple)
  • Yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS (US)
  • mc - magic circle
  • ch - chain
  • st - stitch
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tr - tremble crochet
  • { } - reapeat
  • [ ] - stitch count

FUNKY FLOWER CROCHET PATTERN
Note: The flower is made of 3 separate parts that are continually connected. Each part is worked in rounds.

PART1: MIDDLE CIRCLE (COLOR A - DARK YELLOW)

R1: mc with 8sc, sl st in 1 st sc [8st] 

Note: Do not pull tight, leave a little hole in the middle)

R2: ch1, 2sc in each st around, sl st in 1st sc [16st]

R3: ch1, {sc, 2sc} in each st around, sl st in 1st sc [24st]

Fasten off and weave in the end.


PART 2: INNER PETALS (COLOR B - LIGHT GREEN)
Cut off 60cm (24”) of the green yarn and put it aside (you will need it later). Working if the ball of yarn

R1: mc with 8sc, sl st in 1st sc [8st]

Note: Do not pull tight, leave a little hole in the middle

R2: ch1, 2sc in each st around, sl st in 1st sc [16st]

R3: ch1, {sc, 2sc} *7, 2sc in next 2st, sl st in 1st sc [25st]

R4: {ch3, 2tr in next st, ch3, sl st in next 4st} *4, ch3, 2tr in next st, ch3, sl st in next 3 st

DO NOT FASTEN OFF!!

SEW PART 1 AND PART 2 TOGETHER
Using the 60cm (24”) light green yarn, sew Part 1 on top of Part 2.
  • place Part 1 on top of Part 2
  • from back to front, insert the yarn between ch3 and 1st tr in one the petals
  • pull through in the middle of the Part1 and Part 2, to the back
  • from back to front, insert yarn between 2nd tr and ch3 of the same petal
  • pull through in the middle of the Part1 and Part 2, to the back
  • repeat around all petals and weave in the ends

PART 3: LARGE PETALS (COLOR C -  LIGHT PURPLE)

R1: mc with 20sc, sl st in 1st sc. Note: do not pull tight, see picture

R2: {ch10, sl st in next 4 st} *4, ch10, sl st in next 3 st, sl st in the st at the base of 1st ch10 space

R3: ch1, turn around, {2sc in the middle circle, (sc,  hdc, 12dc, hdc, sc) in ch10-space} * 5, sl st in 1st sc

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

CONNECT PART 2 AND 3 TOGETHER
  • hold Part 3 (Large petals) facing front toward you.
  • pull Part 2 from back to front through one of the large petals
  • turn your work around, you will be working on the back side one, from right to left.

PART 4: OUTER PETALS (COLOR B - LIGHT GREEN)
Continue with the yarn from Part 2

R1: {ch5, sl st around both 2tr of the next petal from Part 2} around, sl st into the 1st ch5-space

R2: {ch1, (sc, hdc, dc, 5tr, dc, hdc, sc) in ch5-space} around, ch1, sl st in 1st ch1

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

HEADBAND

R1: ch6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next 4 ch, turn [5st]

R2: ch2 (doesn’t count as dc), dc in each st, turn [5st]

R3: ch1 (doesn’t count as sc), sc in each st, turn [5st]


Repeat R2 and R3 until the desired length is achieved. Sew ends together and attach flower.
