Easter Crochet Chick Egg Cosy

A few weeks back, I was walking past a flee market store (there are a lot of them here in Vienna) and I saw a really cute Easter crochet chick egg cosy. I wanted to buy it but the store was closed, and when I came back a week later it was already sold. So I decided I make one myself. I browsed the net for some patterns but none of them looked quite like the one I saw in the store. So I decided to design a pattern myself :)

EASTER CROCHET CHICK EGG COSY FREE CROCHET PATTERN PDF

Materials

• 3.5 mm (US: E) crochet hook
• Yarn weight: Worsted weight yarn (I used King Cotton from Gründl)
• Yarn colors: Green, Yellow, Pink, Dark red
• Black beads for eyes
• Red felt for beak
• Yarn needle

Abbreviations (US)

• ch - chain
• st - stitch
• sl st - slip stitch
• sc - single crochet
• hdc - half double crochet
• dc - double crochet
• [ ] - stitch count
• { } - reapeat

Notes

• first hdc is always ch2
• do not fasten off your yarn when changing colors, but keep the yarn on the inside of the chick.

Green Grass Base

Round1: Work with green yarn, ch28, join with sl st. 

Round2: Work from behind into the bottom loop only.{ch4, skip 1 st, sl st into the next st} around, sl st into the 1st ch of ch4, fasten off

Body
Attach yellow yarn into 1st ch of R1.

Round3 - Round4: hdc in each st around, join with sl st [28 st]

Round5: Change to pink yarn. hdc in each st around, join with sl st [28 st]

Round6: Change to yellow yarn, ch2, 2hdc in next st, hdc in next 9st, 2hdc in next st, hdc in next 3st, 2hdc in next st, hdc in next 9st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next 2st [32st]

Round7: hdc in each st around, join with sl st [32 st]

Round8: Change to pink yarn, hdc in each st around, join with sl st [32 st]

Increase Round 6

Shaping the head and tail
Round9: Change to yellow yarn, 22hdc, turn, 

Round10: hdc in next 11st, turn,

Round11: hdc in next 10st, turn,

Round12: hdc in next 9st, turn,

Round13: sc in each hdc and down to the body, sc in the st as last hdc, hdc in next 8st, 2dc in next st, 2dc in next st, join round with sl st.

Round14: ch1, sc in next 2st, ch1, turn, skip 1 st, sc in next st, sc in sl st, hdc, 2dc in next st, hdc, sc
Fasten off, leave a long tail and sew the body shut by pulling the yarn only through the outside loops

Scheme R9 - R14

Comb

Attach red yarn at the top of the head
{ch4, turn, sc in each ch, sl st into the head} * 3

Beak and eyes 
Cut out a little felt diamond and sew it to the head through the middle to form a beak
Attach beads for eyes.
